"lying".

/edit: Wait, booting and running a partition program is enough to call a hard drive "good" these days? Umm...

LOL

I could just see you as a mechanic:

yup, engine starts. Everything is hunky-dory. That banging sound is not important.

That is not a means of determining whether it is good/bad.

You know what.

You're hired. You'd make a great PC Tech.

uh, you probably wanna run some actual diagnostic tools on the drive before you can say whether its good or bad. Try running Windows check disk or download a 3rd party utility such as Spinrite, either of which would be a far more accurate tool than WoW.

Uh, yeah, but how's he going to grind Murlocs watching some dumb diagnostics program? I'll give you a hint, he's not.

Could be just a case of "I have no idea what I am doing"
Lots of computer "repair" shops like that.

It's called real capitalism 101, as opposed to the shit they feed you in schools, almost EVERY business I have worked for is crooked in some way.

You don't have to take the shop's advice, you can just take your machine back from them and go on about your business, fixing or replacing it yourself as required.

I call it normal.
Many computer problems are misdiagnosed due to incompetence, software glitches, etc. I can't tell you how many times Spinrite or other disk diag software passes a drive and yet it won't install windows, but a new drive will. And vice versa.
I own a computer shop. I see this all the time when people bring me a computer and ask me to check another shops diagnosis. It is startling how often they are wrong. Most of the "techs" who work on computers are not techs, but good computer users. They have no training nor certification.
Unfortunately it is almost impossible to prove the computer shop committed fraud.
The only solution is to take to, at the least, an APlus certified tech. And you should try and find other peoples experiences with that tech.
FYI I have owned my computer shop for 11 years. I have seen, seriously, 10 computer shops open and close in my town. Not one of them did a consistently good job. In fact, the large shop that opened a couple of years ago has finally blew thru all the P.C. users in town with thier incompetence. So two days ago they became an Apple store.

Sounds like the OP needs to get more experience before calling out the repair shop.

Why was the laptop even in the shop to begin with if the OP is so technically savvy?

That somehow means the hard drive is okay?

Have you checked whether it has any SMART errors? These are checks specifically designed as an early-warning system; if it has an error on any SMART check, then the drive is likely to fail in the coming days. Any good PC tech will tell you to replace a drive with a SMART error.

And how old is the drive? If it's 5+ years old then yeah, I'd say failure is probably likely. You hear the stories of 14+ years on some drives, but you've got to remember that 5 years is the longest warranty you'll ever find. Some drives fail within a year of purchase. There's no way to know for sure until it happens.

If your mom has no important data on her drive, then you don't have to worry about it even if it is going bad. It will crash one day and that's when you'll replace it. Just make sure she has backups of important files on a different drive (external perhaps).

Don't ever buy a hard drive from the repair shop though, they'll really rip you off. It sounds like the computer runs fine for now, so just keep your data backed up (which everyone should do anyway, even on brand new drives).

but we still have to know what FPS he got on it. if it's under 30fps, then the hard drive is done for sure.
