What's Involved with Setting Up DSL?

I'm thinking about getting Bellsouth FastAccess 6 mbit DSL for my house. It's $43 a month, the fastest speed I can get where I live, comes with a dedicated IP, and Bellsouth lets you run servers on their Internet.

Forgive me, but I have never worked with DSL before. Right now I'm on cable.
All I know about DSL is that it runs though a phone line.

What has to be done to get DSL to work through a phone jack? Can more than one phone jack in my house be fitted with a DSL adapter in case I ever move my computer?

I've also heard DSL can interfere with home security systems. Is that true?

DSL is based on a DSL "Modem" plugged into the Telephone line pass the Modem it is basically the same as Cable.

Any tel. jack can be used, but only one at the time, if you have few computer you need a cable/DSL Router and you have to Network the computer.

My security is Not affected by the DSL, you probably need to call your security company and ask about yours.

Otherwise when using DSL the other tel. related instruments (phones, fax, etc.) need a special filter to isolate them from the DSL Signal (The DSL provider would give you these filters).

Unlike Cable that usually authenticate with MAC address DSL might use a special PPPOE authentication.

DSL PPPOE and Cable/DSL Routers.

Thanks a lot for the help!

I know there was once DSL somewhere in my house as there is a yellowish beige box on a phone jack in my house that has "ADSL" written on it with a marker. So I don't need one of these?

You might want to check out this website as it will help you learn alot about what is needed to get your dsl working at its peak level or at all. DSL Reports

They have alot of information and some great forums where most DSL and Cable providers have at least a couple pf employees around to help.

They can put a filter on the line where it comes in the house that negates having to put individual filters on at each jack that is used. That box may contain the filter.

But if it's inside the house, it almost sounds like they may have dedicated a pair to DSL.

The telco usually sends out a self-install kit, but they may come onsite also. Only they would know.

If you have that ADSL box inside the house, then it seems you are wired witih a
Whole House DSL Filter and you do not need individual filters at each phone jack.

However for best reliability, you should run a CAT 5 wire from the DSL Output
of the Filter to where your DSL Modem will be .. it will work a lot better that way
