What's involved in getting a firearms license in NJ

I know how to use and handle firearms, but I never did in the US. I may be interested in getting a license for a weapon to keep in the bedroom closet. How do I go about it? What do I need to know?

nonsense. Unless you want to carry a concealed weapon or buy a handgun, all you do (if youre over 18) is walk into the store, pay for it and leave.

If you want a handgun then you have all kinds of paperwork to fill out, waiting periods and other nonsense, but no licence is required to have a gun unless it assault weapons ban related. you're thinking of the FFL. Google it.

This is New Jersey we're talking about. I'd bet they license pretty much every kind of gun there. Whereas here in Texas, they license no guns. They issue CCW licenses. And full autos are registered w/ the feds, but the state has no registration at all. Unlike a place like New York, or New Jersey, or Kalifornia.

This is the People's Democratic Socialistic Republic of New Jersey we are talking about. You probably have to register your feather duster 😉

As for owning a firearm, you go to a gun store or gun show, find what you want, pay, fill out an insta-chek form on the spot, they call in your info and a quick check is done on you (Outstanding warrants, felony, etc) and you take it home. The process takes about 10 min.

As for "licences", there are the following (None of which you need)

Concealed carry (Ability to carry concealed firearm on your person)
Curio and Relic (Collector of C&R. Firearms over 50 years old or significant collector value. I have this. I can get mail order guns, and a few more perks that a normal person won't have.)
Federal Firearms Licence (To deal in the business of selling firearms.)

I'm talking about a handgun. Is the process the same?

Call a local gunshop. I'm fairly sure NJ is rather restrictive in allowing it's citizens to possess handguns, though. Although if this is for home defense only, a pump shotgun with a 18" barrel should do the trick fairly well.

A Permit to Purchase a Handgun must be completed on each handgun transferred in this state. It is the responsibility of the seller of the handgun to ascertain that the buyer has a valid Permit to Purchase a Handgun and one additional form of identification. The permit must be completed by the seller and buyer. It is the responsibility of the seller to forward the copies to the appropriate authority. Instructions are printed on the permit.
