I'm curious and wanted to know what some of the upcoming AMD chipsets might be offering in way of features? Roadmaps and articles appreciated!

there the new Sis chipset coming out ...736FX or something. i would think there would be anymore chipsets for the AthlonXP (socket A) anytime soon except for maybe a revision from VIA for their kt400. but i think the chipset available now are pretty much it til hammer hits (no pun intended). though just heard on inquirer that Athlon64 (hammer for desktop) will be delayed til Sept. - glad i didnt wait and got my nforce2. as long as chipset makers can support the new bartons i dont think any new chipsets will come out.

Yep, besides KT400A and the new SiS stuff, I don't think anything major is going to happen (Barton included) until Hammer, which requires a totally new motherboard design (memory controller is on the CPU itself now, causing the pin count to skyrocket).

Speaking of which, didn't the original hammer design have a internal memory support for DDR266? Then I believe they upped the specs to DDR333.... by the time it actually comes out, they are going to need native dual-channel DDR400 on-chip!

So there isn't much between the nForce2 and the new Hammer chipset is what I'm hearing? What new features does the Hammer chipset supposedly bring to the table aside from new processor support?

ok, new things for amd.. the hammer chip is a 64 bit chip that is 32bit compatible. 64 bit is twice is wide as 32, so this will increase performance greatly with 64 bit programs, but it is 32 bit compatible so u won't lose out there. also, i think the whole new hammer chipset + chip is a very big redesign. should support native pci-x, much higher bandwidth, serial ata, and more new goodies i can't remember at the moment. this is a complete revision of the amd line, not just modifying it, but completely changing it. ie, p3 to p4 style. whole new set of cpus and motherboard chipsets.
the barton is a core revision that uses 333 fsb (could possibly go higher?) and allows amd to up the clock speed further on the socket 423 (socket a) architecture. the sis 746fx if priced correctly could be a very good cheap board, but it is too late for sis to compete with nforce 2. the sis 746fx beats the kt400 and is not far behind the nforce 2 chipset, and it uses the same southbridge as the latest sis p4 chipsets, so it will have sata, firewire, and all the other goodies as well.

Still, it will probably be just like current chipsets. You will be able to buy mobos with all the goodies (SATA, FireWire, etc) and value boards with just the minimum (ATA/133 and USB 2.0).
