what's healthier: obesity or alcoholism?

so, I'm catching up on last week's Intervention, and the focal person in this episode went from battling eating disorders to replacing the eating disorders with alcoholism.

but it makes me think... obviously neither is healthy, but which is actually healthier? being morbidly obese but completely free of drugs/alcohol, or being a healthy weight but an alcoholic?

Doesnt the beer drinking version of alcoholism lead to obesity anyways? I dont think Ive seen a skinny person that drinks a lot of beer.

Depends how bad either one is. I've known alcoholics who lived into their 90's.

Genetics will affect the outcome somewhat. "Alcoholic" is a rather broad term as well. Some might be drunk constantly, while others just have a daily drink.

Most alcoholics don't drink beer. They are dowing the cheapest handles vodka/whiskey/gin they can get their mitts on. You can't pour enough beer into a cup or gatorade bottle to keep yourself running through the day.

Obesity. True fact. BMI is a poor indicator of health so someone could still be in good physical shape despite being classified as obese. Ask any football player who's built like a tank.

Alcoholism. The alcohol kills all the bad stuff in your body.

Speaking of health, Pizza is also one of the healthiest foods. you get your bread, your meat, your fruit/veggies and dairy.

Silly people trying to say that certain things aren't healthy when they clearly are! :awe:

Obesity. Most issues associated with obesity get better once you lose weight, or are less deadly such as worn out joints.

Drinking, your liver isn't going to come back.

I'd say it's less unhealthy to be obese then to be a binge drinker. If you're hitting the beers like god damn crazy you'll be on the fast track to be obese as well anyway, better to be combating the one then the two. Besides, you're less likely to run someone over after a Mac attack run then a bar run. Families always seem to make a fuss over that sort of thing.

Exactly, they drink the stuff to get hammered quicker.

well you could do that, but you'd be drinking like half a gallon of beer and pissing all day.

i guess i'd rather be an alcoholic than obese. probably have more fun. one of my uncles was an alcoholic / smoker / diabetic. made it to almost 70, but he had a grea ttime getting there...

that said, i have a really high alcohol tolerance and i guess it depend son your tolerance. i've seen people be totally trashed on just a few beers where if im at a club now, i'm drinking bourbon on the rocks and i guess that does it for me.

i'm sure the guys who just need really hard stop to be constantly drunk, just are more the poster childs of it because to someone with a lower tolerance the amount of stuff they are taking in to stay in that state would be ridiculous. but in the end, drunk is drunk and if you are drunk on 2 beers constantly you are still probably an alcohlic.

alcoholism is worse by far.

it affects every aspect of your life and those around you. you become a danger to other people as well. you can kill yourself or someone else. it's harder to hold a job and it's a VERY expensive addiction to have.

it is possible to be healthy and obese. it's also possible to lose weight a LOT easier than overcoming an alcohol addiction.

alcoholism does focused damage on the liver, obesity puts an overall load on cardiovascular system. obesity effects are more easily reversed, liver damage is a lot harder to recover from.

Another true fact: most people don't have a great deal of muscle mass so BMI is a pretty good indicator of adiposity in the majority of the population.

Really the question is impossible to answer since either condition has big variances in severity.
