Just got a laptop for some webbrowsing and word processing when I'm out and about. Would like to know what's good to have on the go.

I think a little more specific information is needed. Otherwise you might get answers like: A web browser and a Word processing package.

Whatever you need to use is what you should install. I don't carry any software with me, why add the weight? I install what I need (Microsoft Word and Excel, Macromedia Studio, Apache web server - for development), use it, am happy.

If I am on the airplane I would add some games. If staying at cheap motel I might want to try free Netzero or Juno to check email, web surfing, etc.

If you frequent unknown places, Mappoint is the best software to find almost anything you are looking for. Couple that with a GPS receiver and you are good to go.

It has found many mom and pop style restaurants when I search for places to eat and some nearby gas stations too. (I wish they have updated pricing so it would make road traveling alot better).

When travelling, my most used software is Adobe PSE, and ArcSoft's DVD slideshow. And I also enjoy a good DVD movie with PowerDVD. I don't do games, but I also use Eudora Pro and a word processor on occasion. DeLorme Street Atlas with Earthlink is great for navigating and finding places.

alcohol 120% keeps dvd/cd drive spinning to a minimum while on the road = greater battery life.

Any sniffer apps I should know about or is the one in Windows XP ok to use for Wi-Fi hotspots? I can't believe my laptop can actually pick up about 4-5 wireless networks in the neighborhood, and I live in a house!

For Wi-Fi hotspots, will the Windows XP firewall be fine or should I consider a 3rd party one like Zonealarm?

Wow. I had no idea it had that capability. I'll install that on my laptop though it can only burn CD-Rs. Doubles as a CD/DVD emulator too.
