Hi..
I need to upgrade my HD since it's running out of space.
I check the price on pricewatch and it was like 80GB for $60-70.
so any suggeestions on specific models??

btw does 5400rpm and 7200rpm makes noticeable differences in performance?
What about ATA100 and ATA133??
My board can support up to ATA133.

Thanks..

The price is minimal between a 80 gig 5400 & 7200 rpm drive. (3 bucks) Even if the new HD is going to be just a storage drive for music, pics, etc you should go w\ the 7200. Here's a 80 gig Maxtor 7200rpm ATA 133 for $63.90 shipped @ Justdeals.com you could get. The ATA 100 & 133 you wont see much difference between the two,if any, but that drive happens to be a ATA133.

Ive had good luck w\ Maxtor drives, IBM's, Seagate's. Western Digital's are ok I guess but it would be 3rd or 4th in line as a choice for me as I did have one kick out and had read where WD had some quality issues w\ a certain model of HD they put out. But that was several years ago and Im sure they corrected the issue(s).

Hope this helps you.

Everything that Hyperlite said is true -- you can certainly see difference between 5400 and 7200RPM drivers, but there is little difference between ATA/100 and ATA/133. I believe that Maxtor is the only one to offer ATA/133 support, and I think it's just a gimmick, IMHO.

Personally, I prefer WD drives simply based on the fact that I have not had one to die on me yet, and I have had a Maxtor to crap out on me. That's a good deal on an 80gb HD and the new Maxtor drives are VERY quiet with the fluid bearing drives.

There was an 80 gig WD hd w/8mb cache @ Newegg for 80 well i think its still 80. Its exactly 80 and its a pretty good deal. Anything less wouldn't really be worth it in terms of price per gig ratio(below 80)

Go over to the Hot Deals forum. There are always HD deals. I got a Maxtor 120 GB/8MB/7200RPM for $80 after rebates. I'll never fill this one up (that's what I said about the 4G I bought 4 years ago).

This is probably the best IDE drive for the money and WD will give you a 3 year waranty.
Warranty is probably the most important thing since this is a device with moving parts and more susseptable to failure.
Maxtor has excellent customer service also. I believe they have 8mb cache drives too. Not sure but I think some of their drives carry the 3 year warranty like the Western Digitals.
I would stay away from IBM's. I have had 3 failures with their Deskstar series and their customer service SUCKS!

The model number on the WD drive is (I think) 800JB. The one that ends BB only has a 2mb cache.

I've got me a maxtor that's on it's way out. It used to be the bomb and it's lasted 2 years being used for about 18/20 hours a day. It worked fine but it was subjected to a quite serious impact and now the data transfer rate is crap. Benchmarked it owith SiSoft sandra and the data transfer works out about the same speed as an old parrallel 100Mb zip drive... not quick.

I've heared that the Barracuda's are great for quietness.

Quietness is what's replaced the 'have 100 fans in your PC' fad....

I bought a Seagate 7200.7 120GB 2MB cache drive for $77 w/ a $5 new user coupon at a vendor online. The drive is one of the quietest out there and still has excellent performance. I had 2 1200JB WD's and the whine they give off is unbearable in my new computer.
