what's going to happen?

i bought a new asus s-478 MB to replace a mATX sony MB. i bought a cheap but larger case for the new MB. i intend to reuse both optical drives, the floppy, memory and and also the celeron chip, at least until i'm up and running. i will use a new harddrive. as it appears everything should work together, i hope. i've read through the asus online manual (no MB yet) and expect i'm ready, but, what's going to happen? will the floppy work, HDD, etc. work without windows xp installed. is it worse than one cd followed by another till i'm done.

p.s. i've been fiddling with computers for 10 yrs., but by trade i'm just a humble plumber.

best case scenario, your plug your components together, power on, everything works. Then do a fresh install of your OS, install the drivers, then load the programs. Likely one or more of these will need some minor fidgeting, but thats what the forum is for 🙂

Welcome to the Forums 🙂 I made a photo guide that might help you out with the building: http://www.omnicast.net/~tmcfadden/guides/build/index.html

BTW, did you confirm that the new motherboard takes the same type of RAM as the old one, because that could be a gotcha if the old one takes SDR PC133 and the new one takes DDR PC2100/2700/3200. If in doubt, pull out a memory module and does it have two notches or one? DDR memory has one notch, PC133 has two notches.

thanks for the welcome. the photo looks great, that should ease some of the trepidation i have. RAM? hmmmm, i'm not 100% sure, could be a problem, i'm going to grab some DDR400 at circuit city. thanks.

as of today xp is installed and with the exception of a new pos dvd-rw that was defective its been a painless effort. 🙂
