What's "Going steady" mean?

I never heard this term at my high school..but it seems to be prevalent in older sitcoms. Did anyone of you guys ever use this term?
 
see, with people that actually get dates, its usually acceptable to date multiple girls within the same time period until you start "going steady," at which point you cut off the other girls
 
Today going steady refers to the time you are driving over the smooth concrete portion of a bridge while getting a BJ in your car 🙂
