What's Going On?

I've just finished building myself a new computer and I'm having a few troubles. Firstly one of my sticks of ram was faulty but i figured that one out myself and I'm just running with one stick atm. The problem is, whenever I install various apps, mainly virus scanner (coincidence?) and a few other things, when I restart windows goes all slow, not opening up some windows, task bar icons etc, and when I try to shut it down I have to manually end some processes, and even then it just hangs on a screen with just the background, it hasn't crashed, but it's just sitting there. Just before I installed some windows updates and it played up again after restarting but came right after 15 seconds or so. Any ideas on whats going on?

The Machine:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-9 nForce 4 Ultra
512mb kingmax ddr 400 (supposed to be 2 sticks but only running one currently)
160gb Seagate 7200.7 SATA HDD
Gigabyte 6600GT
Audigy 2 ZS
NEC 3520A
Enermax 485W Noisetaker

I think I figured it out, I had a virus of some sort. I just reinstalled windows again and loaded up Norton Internet Security straight away and so far I haven't had any of the same problems I had before. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

I would tell you but the problem came back again last night. I installed all the drivers off the hundred or so CD's. I installed the drivers for the wireless lan card last, as as soon as I was connected to the internet I updated all my virus definitions, then after restartingonce or twice the problem came back. So I pulled the wireless lan card out and today I'm going to try using a wired lan. Not sure it'll help, but I'm sorta clutching at straws a bit. If anyone else has any ideas feel free to try and help!
