SETUP:
Athlon 600mhz
2x 128MB PC100 (infinion/Kingston)
30GB/40GB 72000 (QuantumFireball/WD Cavier)

I can't trace back when my problem started and whether or not I upgraded anything at that time but my computers performance has been flakey. Getting higher rate of coasters when burning (suspect cheap spindle no-name POS)
Everytime I close off a browser it lags (winamp pauses for the duration).

I also have winamp playing when I'm doing ANYTHING at my computer (even when I'm not, it's on).

So what's going on ? For the life of me I can't figure out what's wrong since I"ve been routinely doing this sice forever. Odd how the problem just crept up on me.

Any ideas ??

redo windows is your best bet. If you havea mobo with VIA chipset make sure you have the newest or at least almost newest 4in1 drivers. Reinstall some stuff like sound card.

Format/Install has always answered my prayers, but not anymore. :(

At the slightest hint that something was wrong with my machine I would format/reinstall windows. Currently it's pretty bare bones in terms of the number of applications I'm running.

I have like 7 partitions and have never defragged ever since I bought my machine, so theoretically it could be that ? I'm at a lost for words to describe it so out of despair I'm going to defrag the other partitions even tho tho I just installed windows no more than a week ago.

argh !

Is there a diagnostic tool that lets you get deep and dirty about the cpu/memory usage ?? WIndows Task Manager isn't doing it justice.

Blew me away when I say that but it said it repaired everything.
