What's going on here? Correct RAM count only showing up in Windows

Just finished an upgrade, in both hardware and OS - from XP Pro to Vista Home Premium, and from 2GB of RAM to (what's supposed to be) 6GB. That's the odd part:

[*] BIOS splash screen shows only 5054MB
[*] Vista's own Task Manager shows only 5054MB under Physical Memory
[*] Vista's 'System Properties' - right-click 'my computer' --> Properties - reports the full 6GB
[*] CPU-z also reports 6144MB, or the full 6GB

Why would the BIOS & Vista's Task Manager come up 1GB+ short?

If your bios has a memory remap feature, you should try that one

You should also update your bios if possible.

BIOS is up-to-date; I did that just a couple days ago. I also found the 'memory remap' setting and enabled it, and that seems to have done the trick - everything is reporting the full 6GB now 🙂

Starting with SP1, Vista lies. It knows how much memory is installed and reports that instead of what it can use, because consumers with 4GB on 32bit systems kept seeing 3.3GBish of RAM and were either complaining about it or sending their systems in thinking they were broken. That said if you're using Vista64, you should be able to use all 6GB.

Yes, I am using Vista 64 🙂 And like I said, enabling the 'memory re-map' worked - the full 6GB shows up everywhere now.
