whats getting so hot?

What is ~= to the CPU temp at idle and 10-12C hotter underload? I verified speedfan's temp via BIOS, was at 45/46C in both from a hard boot. this "temp 1" was at ~52C and oddly enough it's whats being reported by default in the system tray...speedfan default? either way, peaking at 55C after 45min of Prime95 'In-Place large FFT' test. got to 53C in the blended test. wanted to verify it wasn't the RAM, and based on the results I'm not sure, I know not much is use with large FFT, Temp didn't vary with the size of the FFT 1024 and 768(?) and 512 all had about the same reading, from 50-55C. Any ideas?


Don't know if it will help, AM2 3800+ 2.58Ghz, EPoX MF4-Ultra, nForce4 NB, don't know about SB I could check. the only info I have about the temp sensor is coming from speed fan: Chip F71882F, ISA bus and the address is $290. BIOS only has system temp(ambient ?) and CPU which is almost identicle to speedfan, I don't see how I could drop 7C in less than 30 seconds.

I'm not sure what you are asking or what the problem is. Btw. Small FFT generates more heat in my experience, but those temps are nothing to be worried about.

You can drop 7C within seconds very easily, if the CPU is no longer under load. (IOW, rebooting and checking temps from BIOS will only show idle temps, no matter how much load you were under before rebooting.)

I'm trying to figure out whats running so hot, I'm not sure what the problem is. and 45C is FAR from idle, it's more like 32-35. I also waited in BIOS for 2 min. only droped 2C, I don't know how/why the system would instantly drop down to idle temp when load is removed, granted it can drop fairly fast. Also ran Prime95 got it to 52C and stoped, waited about 3 min and this mystery temp was 49C droped to 48C seconds after. So I'm having issues with the 7c drop in seconds, and if it is the CPU 52C under load is a tad too hot for me. I'm aware that small FFT generates more heat, from the CPU, I wanted to makesure my RAM wasn't the issue here.

*edit* - Why does speedfan's temp vary so much from xp to vista? ran in vista and thought I magically fixed my problem. The same Temp 1 didn't go over 45C(in Vista) but the CPU was reporting the same temp (within 2C)

your idle temp and load temp shouldn't drop that fast. mine takes about 20 seconds to go back to ~5 higher than idle. then about 2 mintues later it goes back to idle . i guess every comp varies. especially on the heatsink that you currently have installed. the speedfan xp and vista problem. i'm not sure . i havn't experienced vista with speedfan but. if you use an Intel based CPU. i'd alwys trust TAT. and for AMD. i guess coretemp would be a good one.

Well, Speedfan and CoreTemp both show the same temp for the CPU, within 1C. Still don't have a clue as to whats getting so hot, any other suggestions?

Thermal paste getting dried? ugh. not enough direct contact. on your CPU between your heatsink. Also.. your Vcore? too hi. honestly. i don't think 45 Idle is too high. a high idle would be about 50's . your idle is mild. i guess my E6300 @ stock volt. idles at about 37-40C. load is about 48-51C. so i guess yours its not bad. you can probably try to resit your heatsink. and clean the dust out. it helps quite a bit. mine was from dirty (54 load) to clean (50 load) 4C difference is a good.

The idle is fine, and it's under 35C, the issue is this mystery temp from Speedfan, I don't know what it is and why it's getting so hot, or warm... I can't think of anything that would put off ~10C more heat than the CPU under load but have a similar temp at idle.

The issue isn't CPU temp, it's where ever this 'Temp1' is coming from, I know the CPU at 33/45 (idle/load) is fine, but something gettting hotter than that is not. I need to know where to point my next fan.

can't help you there bud. but sometimes speedfan isn't correct. sometimes it gives a stupid temp. that isn't connected to anything just a random temp. Example: aux. at 140C? wtfx. LOL thats shows on mine. if its at that rate. i should smell burning and stuff. i don't think you should worry too much.

if it were 150c and stayed there I wouldn't worry, but climbing while under load bothers me a little. I do appericate the help thought
