What's generally a better call - a newer car / high miles, or old car / lower miles?

2008 Prius', SoCal area

150k miles fully loaded = 8-8.5k
85k miles barebones = 9.5k
85k miles fully loaded = 12-12.5k
 
Things I learned today:

Never trust, always bring a mechanic or take it to a shop before putting down money.
