I'd get the 98 Corolla since it is newer, you probably won't have as many problems with it as the Escort. I have a 95 Altima and there is the normal wear and tear I hate paying for. :(

Isn't that sort of like asking whether it is better to get shot in the kneecap or the elbow?

My girlfriend used to have '95 Ford Escort and that's the only car where she never got a speeding ticket. Why? That car wouldn't go faster than 45 mi/h no matter what, even going downhill. :=)

Probably more similar to "Would you like to drive or walk?

60 mph . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .8.4
Standing 1 /4-mile . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .16.6 sec @ 83 mph

1998 chevy prizm

The prizm is a clone of the corolla, so the times will be the same.

It'd be really close, it'll come down to the driver. If you want to win, gut your interior, take out the spare, tools, rear seats, etc. and run on a 1/4 tank of gas.

I really don't see why everyone finds this so funny. Being stick, both those cars are probably faster than what a lot of the people in this thread drive.

BTW CadetLee, I think it's better to stick with the vvti boards than atot for this sort of thing. ;)

Yeah..unless you've actually driven a stick Corolla, don't diss it too much...it's not THAT slow :p

I kinda figured that VVTi is a little better for this - lol...but I put it here anyways. It's already at VVTi. ;)

have you talked to DifferentOne/Sonny on vvti about it? He says he runs 15.5 with just a p&p, which is $300 dollars of head work.

Also consider NOS. :Q Paul runs a 55 shot NX wet kit and he doesn't have any problems.

oh yeah, I remember on c3 this guy had a turbo celica GTS swap in a corolla and he claims to run 12s. :Q:Q Maybe you should do that.

It has 115k miles on it.. :Q So, I don't want to overstress it with NOS. :)

I'm thinking of a cold air intake and possibly new exhaust..already bought a money order for a strut bar. It already outhandles a friend's '64 El Camino (which isn't too hard to do - lol)..but I can't quite compete in the straights. Maybe eventually...when my motor dies, I could probably drop a couple grand and put a 2ZZGE engine in...not sure if that's possible, but someone said I could. 169hp...a little more power than what's in there now. Unfortunately, it's expensive....might as well save my pennies for a Celica or something :(

It would be quick, though...a bit faster than a Civic :D

Strut bar: $40
New suspension: ~$500
New engine: $2-3k

The look on a ricer's face as he realizes that a stock-looking Corolla just whipped him:
Priceless.

It's late, and I'm going to bed.. :p

Edit: In response to your edit..are you referring to the Celica GTS's 2ZZGE engine? If so, do you know how much modification was required, and how much the engine costs?

I didn't buy it because it was fast..I bought it because it was cheap. Can you find any decent (ie no Kia, no Hyundai, etc) 1998 vehicle in excellent condition for $3k? I should be able to beat a stock Civic, anyways..maybe even a riced-out Civic (all the extra weight, y'know ;))

AHAHAHAHAH You are putting down KIA and Hyundai when you are looking at an Ford Escort? The next time you are on the freeway tell me how many 94 Escorst your see.

I would love to see that race!! Would have to time it with a sundial.

Yeah celica 2ZZ GTS swap. There are no parts for corollas, but when you swap in a celica motor, that problem doesn't really matter anymore.

here's the thread

If you want to buy the motor search car-part.com, I found this in ca, you can do a search for your home state.

2000 Engine Toyota Celica 2ZZGE eng (GTS)-01-264 $1400 M M Parts USA-CA(Fontana) E-mail 1-800-429-7278

If you get a celica GTS motor, you want a 2000/2001, toyota later lowered the rev limiter so later motors aren't as powerful.

If you are gonna swap cars though, consider a WRX also. :Q

Don't tell VVTI I told you that though, they'll have my head. ;)

If you push them both off a cliff they are equal....so pick the one that will withstand the fall the best.

I don't think you get it...read my original post. I *have* a Corolla...I'm not considering buying an Escort. My reference to Kia and Hyundai was asking if you could do much better than a 1998 Corolla in excellent shape for less than $3,000 (with brand new tires).
