What's faster? Stock '94 Escort or stock '98 Corolla?

Just wondering what you guys think...a guy at work has a '94 Escort (standard, I think 127hp), which he thinks is hot stuff...50mph in second, 6,000rpm... :p

Now, I'm no speed demon..but I have decent acceleration (1998 Corolla CE, standard tranny, 120hp..~125 torque, IIRC)..and it's still accelerating at 50mph (in second).

If we ever did a 0-60, who do you think would be faster, assuming driving ability is equal? I might have an edge in shifting, not quite sure though.

They're both econoboxes.

You don't go out and buy either because its "fast".

To answer the original question:
I don't give a sh!t ;):p

I'd have to go with Toyota over Ford/new technology over old.

Horsepower is about the same, but you have to factor in the weight. Probably near equal, so the difference in acceleration would probably be negligble.

Just go and find out:p

And make it a longer race....find a large parking lot and set up some cones:)

I didn't buy it because it was fast..I bought it because it was cheap. Can you find any decent (ie no Kia, no Hyundai, etc) 1998 vehicle in excellent condition for $3k?

I should be able to beat a stock Civic, anyways..maybe even a riced-out Civic (all the extra weight, y'know ;))

It'd be like a race between two 3-toed sloths...both have an about equal chance of dieing before you'd actually finish ;)

Good one!

Yeah, they're both cheap cars and both fine for their intended purpose.

PS, the only ~125 HP Escort in 94 was the GT and the top of the line sedan (don't know what the trim was called). Most escorts in 94 had around 90-100 HP.

Well I seen some numbers for a 94 Escort GT: 8.4/16.5, which I think is a tad faster than a Corolla. But they're probably really close, hp within 10, torque within 10 prob, and the weight is probably very close too.

Set up a track with some stolen traffic cones and race. That way, it's not the car, but the driver ;)

Out of curiosity..how many of you laughing hyenas have ever driven a relatively new standard Corolla? It's not exactly a Geo Metro...

Torque from revving it would make the entire car roll, wouldn't it.. :p

The Escort GT was powered by a Mazda engine. They weren't half bad for being a cheap little econo-box.

I saw a Honda CRX with a 350 in it (converted to RWD obviously, might've been blown too, can't remember off the top of my head)

Not everybody can go spend $20k on a car...at my $6/hour, this was about the best I could do. Give me a break...

Hey don't worry about it man. I don't know why everyone is giving him such a hard time, all he did was ask which of the two cars was faster. He already knows it's not fast, he never said that. And it's probably as fast as 1/2 the people's cars on here anyway. A 125hp Civic isn't fast either!
