I believe too that the 9600 could be pushed much further, on the core at least and maybe on the mem if you get lucky, than an 8500. Assuming oc'ing is your bag.
A 9600 is usually faster than a 8500, if you must have dx9 then out of the two you mentioned get the 9600. However there are much better dx8 video cards than the 8500 like the GF4 Ti4200 for example!

Not for this system, but very good point Tstep. I'm just adding to my fanless web-browsing/office/minimalist HTPC rig a little better graphics than the on-board I'm using.. Must be fanless card. Thanks
Not certain by any means, but I believe stock to stock the 9600 may have an advantage on the heat side of things given it's a 0.13? core on the 9600 vs a 0.15 or larger on the 8500. That would be something to look into on "small / quiet box front". Again, not sure of this, but seems logical.
