Unless you have FIOS available in your area, then Comcast is probably your best bet. It's faster than AT&T's U-Verse. It's easy to jump on that "I hate Comcast" bandwagon. I'm happy with their service.

I tried to get Comcast to come and install my cable and I would have gladly gotten the internet (it was $19.99/mo with $7 cable, $34.99 without!), but they wouldn't do it because of some crap with my landlady...Who knows?

I have Roadrunner, and have for many years. I like it. It has its issues but its above everything except FIOS IMO

LEOS - quite fast (comparable to 512kbps DSL)
MTN - slower like ISDN with 700mS latency.

When I lived in Manhattan I was on a 100mbps handout. That was so nice.

Talk to your landlord? It sounds like they have an agreement to do TV throughout the apartment complex, or wherever you live... hopefully she'd understand you need HSI.

This question is highly dependent on what you have available in your area. Cable and ISP companies around here have a near monopoly over the "last mile". I have used comcast the last few years and hated my local provider. I recently moved, same city, same company but my lines are 10x better, but if I had the choice I would switch to FIOS but I won't see that for a little while.* I know in my NYC area, most types of services are monopolized, it often becomes a question of DSL or cable and usually a single choice in one of other company. Even if you have multiple DSL providers, they often have to use the last mile controlled by the local Bell. This is afaik and my experience. Could be a bit dated too.

* FIOS is pissing me off. They laid down FIOS lines and service in a less populated area of my area, and not in the denser young business professional area where I live... I was told the reasoning was probably due to them being reluctant to replace the current T3 infrastructure. I don't know, I just want FIOS.


Rubycon: What the heck gave you 100mpbs? I have never even heard of that type of speed for other then an institution/large company.

if you're not going dial-ups, it's really semi-limited options no matter where you are... for me, it was either Optimum or Verizon FIOS; I would have rather had fios, but my landlord made a really big stink because of those reports that verizon tears out the copper and shit.

your landlady is within her right to refuse any company drilling holes and intalling wires in her property. a differnt service provider doesn't fix that.

if you're in an urban area and close to a CO, then you can get good speeds. And REALLY good prices with AT&T DSL.

That's what they told me (ethernet handout) and it ran downstairs. I had to go down there to talk to someone once and it was a room full of servers and switches. One of the guys told me that the connection to the internet in that building was an OC-12. :Q

All I remember when setting up a new computer getting windows updates was like I was "lanned" to microsoft update! :laugh:

The cable's already there and multiple people have it. I used to, then it got shut off due to an error on their part, and they need to look at it, but she won't open it up...

I have something like that where I work (big hospital + med school) but it is extremely budgeted per zone. I don't know how IT caps each area but I can typically get 5-8mbps downstreams and 2-4mbps up (I never pushed the up too hard). 1 problem I get often though is network hangs on routing which is I guess, part of the downside on being on a complex network. I don't think I have ever worked on anything faster then 10mb and the irony of it was that it wasn't in an institution, it was my old house/apt on an uncapped OptOnline connection. I would often get stable 10mb/2mb on what I paid for was 3mb/768k ($45/month). I miss that place. I remember my shock when I had to DL a 2gb file (from corporate server) and it took less then an hour :shocked:
I don't think I could handle a large chunk of OC-12 bandwidth. I'd sit with a box of pizza and try to download the entire internet
