I'd love to hear what everyone has heard and theorized on when the next releases of high-end cards from Nvidia and ATI are due.

R520 x1800XT: November
G70 7800GTX 512MB: December
G72 Refresh: Spring 2006
R600: November 2006
G80: ???

I'm going to wait till the end of November/Early December to buy a 512MB 7800GTX if possible to replace my 6800GT (400/1100) which will be given to a family member as a Christmas Gift (building them a gaming computer). I just wish it was the G72 coming out at Christmas time.

Number of question marks = level of my unsureness. :D

We may well see a 512MiB GTX before the X1800XT is widely available, since such a part certainly wouldn't be difficult for nvidia to get out, and we know that nvidia will have it out all over the place on the day it is released. Just saying that the december release for the 512MiB GTX may be a bit off, though it is all rumour.

Be real surprised if ATI came out with the R600 next August. Nvidia may have their next part out in 12 months. But ATI is a different story.

if r600 is similar to xenos (which one might expect) then it is very possible that ati would have it out.

and we've all heard that R580 has successfully taped out already, so perhaps that will come around in spring?

Dude, ATI is producing the X1800XT right now and have been since they recieved the proper metal, they would have had it available now but cant because of a production glitch (vendor used wrong/low grade material) that wouldnt let the clocks go high enough, so they labeled all the XTs that didnt make the cut XLs. If they know whats best for the companies image, they will make the XTs release widely available on the November deadline. Hell the XT might come out at the same as the Xbox360.

Theres more to it that just sticking another piece of GDDR3 onto the board, there are slight modifications that have to be made on the board. Then theres might be a heat issues/increase with more memory, so they might have to up the stock cooling. All these things take time to do, Im not saying that it could be done quickly, but Nvidia will probably not release a 512mb version atleast until a 512mb ATI is out.

I hope for the sake of ATI's reputation and fanboys, well whats left of them after all these paper launches, that they release the X18x0 or X1900 series (R580) sometime around March 06. They better not paper launch the R600 like the X1x00 for the same reason as above, I expect it to be an easier shift because they arent changing their die size.

Rumor has it the 512mb 7800 card will feature 90nm core and speeds of 550mhz or more.

But who really knows.

I expect Dec will bring us a 512mb 7800GTX that will be priced at $599.99 or more and Feb/March 06 will bring us new 7800 versions, ie, 7200/7600.

As for the next big thing, I dont expect NVidia to come out with anything until the release of Vista next year. DX10 will brng their new card.

If thats Q2/06 or Q3/06 thats when we'll see the next big thing.

there are two entirely different teams working on the r520 and the r600. somehwere between august-november next year seems good.
