I am going to have an upgraded rig for Xmas
old/current PC:
AMD Xp 2000+, Radeon 9600se 128mb AGP 8x

New:
AMD 64 4000+
ATI X800XL 256mb PCIE

And my brother asked what I want for Xmas so I am going to get a cheap game for Xmas. I would get Cod4 but I have played the hell out of it on my roomate's 360 so no point in getting it, but CoD2 seems to still have a huge audience and I was wondering what online is like.

I'm glad to see its 32 players online (not like 8 on 360), but is there any type of ranking system?

Also, what other games have 'rank up' systems? I do have BF2

Thanks

the game is actually better with only like 8 players per team max.

cod4 online for pc is completely different then consoles. completely different feeling. you should get cod4

cod2 is good, but not as good. imho it requires a lot more skill then cod4, and it can get boring in a very short time, since there is no ranking system, no challenges to complete, nothing at all. it feels like a very old game despite the great graphics.

CoD2 has excellent map designs and online gameplay, however, it really depends on what type of online shooter you want. If you want a mix of long range and close quarters combat with fairly open maps, then get CoD2. If you want smaller maps and really love close quarters combat with airstrikes and helo support, then get CoD4.

I would prefer to get CoD2 because it's less of a hectic fragfest and has some nice open maps.

I guess it depends on what games youve played before and the style of gameplay you go for. COD2 to me was the worse one out of the series. All the maps are too small and tight so theres no strategy, its just one big chaotic clusterfvck of shotguns and machineguns blasting away. The new maps sucked and the only good ones were already in COD1 ie. carentan, brecourt, harbor etc. If youve played and liked the original COD/UO or MOH then I think COD2 will be a disappointment.
