What's broken, my car charger (phone) or my car?

I recently bought a Nokia 6010, brand new. It charges fine in the house, but when I'm driving it has some issues. If I slow down, it stops charging and then "beeeeeep" starts charging again when I hit the accelerator, like I just plugged it in. It's bloody annoying, but I'm just a tad worried it could indicate a car problem (yes, I'm probably ignorant for thinking that, but oh well.)

Any ideas? I've tried it on my other Nokia charger, meant for an older phone, but it does the same thing. I'll probably buy a new charger just in case so I can say I tried all the cheaper avenues.

Any car/electronic geniuses take a stab at what the issue might be?

Sounds like your cigarete(sp?) lighter isn't outputting enough voltage. Short answer: your alternator and/or battery are suspect. When did you first notice this?

I tried both cigarette lighters in the car. I just noticed this, just recently acquired the phone. Both of the other phones have trouble charging, but not related to how fast the car is going (the chargers are loose in the ligher - when they're jammed in properly they work fine without the speed-related charging issues.)

I drive a '00 Pontiac Grand Prix, if that makes any odds. Yes, you can all make fun of me now. 😛

Hmm. Then it could simply be that GM goofed and made the outlets slightly larger then they need to be. Have you tried plugging other things into them?

Tried my other two phones, yeah. They wiggle slightly and charge on or off depending. The 6010 definitely is related to how much I'm accelerating. Worth going to see a mechanic, you think? I've talked to a few other people and they all thought that it could be the alternator, but that it would be odd for something requiring as little power as a cell phone to be having trouble charging if I'm having alternator trouble.

Hmmmm. I'm not sure what to make of that. Sounds like the 6010 has a faulty charger and the outlet itself seems to be mishaped.

Guess I pick up a new charger then. 🙂 Thanks. I was wondering if this might be an obvious sign of impending trouble that you car guys would immediately jump on, but doesn't look like it.

Cheers!
