whats better?

Intel P4 1.7

Intel 1ghz

I know both are topped out for there mainboards due to intel switching formats again and also since the 1ghz is the highest fcpga you can get.

I'm building one which do you think would be better. its a 300-400 difference when the whole systems are set up so would a 1.7 be good for a extra 2 years compared to the 1ghz

There is a whole bunch more room for improvement in the P4, when software companies start writing optimized code for it, it will be a much closer contender to the AMD's cpu cycle for cpu cycle with a definate advantage in memory bandwidth. I think there is a lot of scuttlebutt about the P4, If I wasn't so financially impaired (Politically Correct Phrase?), I would probably have a P4 for a second computer and use whichever one performed the task I needed at hand better.

I run an AMD right now, and too be honest it currently is the best deal and with the way AMD's manufacturing has been (aggressive), I kind of doubt the P4's performance will rival the fastest AMD's chip for a while(pure speculation though). But they are both fine. And the only reason the performance of the flagships of both companies are even discussed is the nature of this forum. Both are functional and both are "real world" fast as most people will ever need.

Compatibility issues? Um not really sure I know of anything specific? VIA's chipset has some issue with soundblaster lives, but I am pretty sure thats a "non-issue" now. Please list the ones that turned you away from AMD for curiosities sake.

WSPTrooper, The only video card compatibility issue is with nVidia cards and another manufacture I can't think of. Apply a small patch and poof, it's gone.

Cheap made cores - I've never cracked a core in my life, with both Intel and AMD. (20-30 computers built within the last 3-4 months) Just be careful and you're fine. I have even used the FOP38 w/o problems.

Heat Issues - Winter can be cold in some places, so it's good. Otherwise, people have to realize they can't overclock in the summer. Turn it down to stock speed and you're set.

Driver Issues - Name some?

How about justify the costs between the Intel and AMD CPUs. Personally, I'd rather have a faster CPU for less (AMD), and not be so damn lazy as to install a few patches. You learn from mistakes...must mean AMD users are smarter than Intel users. J/K
