Well I just bought a new system (not on this computer) running a AMD Athlon XP 1900+ with 768 Megs of DDR ram. A new Nvidia GeForce 3 and all the other toys.

Now what I'm wondering what would be the best operating system for me? Because I play many new and old games some that run in MS-DOS, now I basicly have enough left over cash to go out and buy any of these Win XP Pro or home, Win Me, Win 98, Win 2k Pro... What do you all think the best os would be. Please help I'm really having a hard time deciding...

Thanks
Andrew

It really depends on just how archaic those games are. XP can run most things just fine, but for really old stuff, I find 98 is best. As a rule of thumb, in my experience, if the game's docs or readme mentions Win95 compatibility, it will *probably* run on XP. If the game is old enough that its docs don't even recognize Win95's existence, you'll probably need 98. If you're really worried, set up a dual-boot 98/XP box. The biggest issue you're likely to run into, especially with a brand new machine, is whether the older games will recognize your sound card or not.

What os are you currently using? if it works for everything you need, then you are better off with it. I personally recommend WinXP to run newer programs, but for MS-DOS games, WIN98.

Win98 or ME don't even place, I'd rather give up my computer than run either of them.

Go with either XP or 2000. I personally run Windows 2000 on my main machine and don't have any problems, I run XP on my secondary machine and also have not encountered any serious problems.

I think it really depends on what your priorities are. If keeping the games are extremely important then figure out which OS will support all/most of them. Assuming that all of the OSes you mentioned will run your games, apps, then I would close my eyes and pick W2K or XP.

Good Luck!

Hi,

I would go for "Windows 2000" because it 100% stable and run very fast, and it has been provern that "Windows 2000" has outperformed "Windows XP". I run "Windows 2000 Server" on a stand-a-lone computer and runs fine. I read somewhere that if you want the FULL power of "Windows XP" you would have to have 2 CPU's.

Best Microsoft Operating Systems:

1. Windows 2000
2. Windows 98
3. Windows XP
4. Windows 95
5. Windows NT 4
6. Windows Me

Cheers

I'm running Win2k pro and have not ran into any problems with it yet. What was very shocking is I can play the very old DOS games on this system. Game's like Pong, Mission Impossible, Doom, WarCraft, just to name a few of them. I think it's fun to go back and play those old DOS games like that all though. On computer's like today those old game's run very fast. :D But you can get a program off the net that will allow you to use only a fraction of the processor speed.

I won't mind trying Win XP but since 2k don't give me any problem's. Why should I upgrade.

Here's an idea: get Windows XP and put in on FAT32. It can make a DOS bootdisk no problem. Just copy over your drivers to the disk, add config.sys and autoexec.bat lines where necessary, and you can use WinXP and just use a floppy to get DOS access (DOS is pretty small). All your stuff should work just fine.

Do yourself a favor and read the FAT vs NTFS FAQ, and in the end choose NTFS because FAT sucks and needs to die off.

WHAT?!!?

FAT32 = FASTEST

NTFS = very good for security, but if a low risk situation exsists then FAT32 it up!!

also - Have you people ever used DOS?

ZERO BUGS

DOS was before programers got lazy!!

The major difference i found between 2k and xp is that xp tries to do everything it can....for the computer savy its useless
go with win 2k or linux...although linux has some maturing to do before its mainstream

DONT CRITIZE BEFORE YOU KNOW ALL THE FACTS
