Whats better performance wise 2.6ghz XP or 2.2 ghz 64

I was wondering if the performance increase over my ocd xp2600m at 2.6 ghz. will be worth the upgrade at this point to a AMD 64 3200 or 3400+, what do you guys think will I see a worthwhile difference to upgrade now or should I wait for prices to drop and the Windows 64 bit platform to come out.

Well, since you wer willing to OC your XP, i am assuming you are willing to OC your new A64. So in that case i would say buy an A64 3000+ Winchester for $150 ( Retail box w/ HSf ) and OC it to higher then 4000+/FX53 speeds (2.4Ghz). Easily done with 3000+ Winchester core and any half decent OC mobo. You are almost guaranteed 2.5-2.6 on air with the 3000+ or 3200+ Winchesters, some like the 3200+ better because of the 10x multi compared to the 3000+ 9x multi, but i say save the $50 bucks and get the 3000+.

I know but I was trying to get out of ocing for a bit, but that does grab my attention, hmmm you make an awesome point there richard. OHhhh Richard.

Damn, I feel like a wolf is standing over my body licking its chops, HELP!!!!!! LOL!!!!

yeah, the winnies are freakin awesome! I have my 3000+ at 2.5GHz right now, rock stable, using stock cooling (albeit with arctic silver 5). At these speeds, I'd say you might see an improvement over your setup.

Still, I'd probably wait another month or 2. I think AMD is releasing their Rev E0 chips in march or april, and they will basically fix all the A64 problems. They have SSE3 support, improved memory controller allowing for 4 full DIMMs to operate in dual channel at DDR400, rather than reverting to DDR333 and 2T with the current winchesters. Oh, and they feature SSDOI (strained silicon directly on insulator) so they might overclock even better, say, to 3GHz or even higher. At that point, it'll really be worth the upgrade.

Gobucks,

In your sig you show your mem running at 2T. Wuldn't you be better off performance wise running that with a Mem divider at a slower clock rate and using 1T command rate. Have you read Zebo's Mem sticky at the top of this forum?

everytime I see the name richard it reminds of the movie Tommy Boy. It just cracks me up, I think I will wait on the 64 upgrade for now..., well once the win64 takes off I think the upgrade will do me good. From my gaming and testing, 2T is not worth FSB performance increase at all, its like your mem is running twice is slow, litteraly. Anyways

Yep, exactly what Im building right now. Just need a pci-e card.

i've been trying to run at 1t, but my system isn't stable using it, regardless of memory speed. It will fail memtest at 1T DDR333 3-4-4-8, the most relaxed i can imagine. I don't think it's the memory, cause the problem was there with 2 different kinds, and this new Crucial Ballistix is supposed to run 1T up past DDR550. I think it's a bios issue, so in the meantime, i'm trying to make up for it by overclocking. I'm hoping that the next official bios will have the problem fixed, otherwise i might have to get a replacement board.
