what's better.... more RAM or faster RAM?

Would you....

1. get a stick of kingston hyperX pc3000 (2-3-3-7 - i think this is the right timing) 512 megs for 89.50

2. get a stick of twinmos/winbond (same chip that the corsair xms uses) pc3200 (can do 2-2-2-5) 256 megs for 74.00

i hear both overclock well... so...

i know that it'd be easier to upgrade if i had a 512 stick... i'm using a 8rda+ and i keep hearing that his dual channel business gives minimal gain so i was thinking... maybe 1 512 stick would be good for me... i'll just sell off these pc2700 samsung sticks i have 🙂

i'd get more RAM
so i would go with option 1
but then again, it will limit your overclock
especially when you have a third 1700+ coming😉

depends on what you do
i find myself multitasking like crazy, so ram gets eaten up pretty damn quick

for me, 512 is minimum heh

id probably go wtih 1.
or maybe go to forsale/trade section and get one of the 512corsair sticks sellin for 135bux 😉

^ what they said 😀 Ok, looking at your rig specs, you are at 2340MHz... what bus speed is your Samsung PC2700 doing? I'm wondering if it's really that cost-effective to jump from PC2700 to PC3000... are you going to have a noticable increase in performance, or are we just talking about OC'ing as a sport here 😀

im only fairly new to a lot of this but i read heaps and research a lot
most of what i have seen says
1/512mg is the min req today
2/more is better than faster

I can say that when I bought PC3200 Corsair XMS, I wasn't sure if it was a good idea to get that instead of PC2700.. however, I'm very glad I did because I'm pushing my front side bus up to 200MHz and I don't think that PC2700 could do that without any hassles. The PC3200 just runs in sync with my CPU FSB, making it easy to overclock. So if overclocking is your main concern, here is something to think about.

512MB. Since I assume that you are a "power user" (otherwise, why would you be overclocking?), you'd need at least 512MB of memory. 256MB is enough for my dad's eMachine, or a nice linux/BSD box, but since you're overclocking, you have to be gaming or running some manner of distributed client.

I had 512MB slow as feck RAM (PC2100 2.5-3-3-7) and it was better than running a stick of 256MB at 2-2-2-5 140FSB, and this was with Win 2k. Win XP would probably be worse with the 256.
3D Mark was quicker with 256MB, but things like UT2k3, GTA 3 etc, basically all games, were faster with the extra RAM, so go with that.

EDIT: 512MB was Generic single stick of PC2100
256MB was a TwinMOS PC 2700 CAS2 stick, not winbond.

well...

i want to run at least 11.5 x 200

and i'm pretty sure i'll be able to hit 200 FSB or close to it with the kingston... i think people are getting good o/c's with it...

right now, i'm at 180 @ 2.5-3-3-7

cas 2 is faster though 😱

it only affects initial latency
after that its all one after the other

Actually it's 2-3-3-1 (Cas2) and I have it going now and not pushed it's limits @ 188FSB 2-2-2-2...Kingston also has some 256MB PC3500 that I have had @ 210FSB for $70
