I dont know the first thing about 3d programs but it seems the 2 contenders are MAYA and 3dmax, I am looking to get one for movie editing purposes, yea Ill also have to get a lot of plugins too. But I was wondering if anyone has a recomendation of which is better.....

Thanks

Oh, and by "get" it seems pretty obvious you mean "download illegally" Cause there's no way you'd drop several grand on a program you've never used before based on the recommendations of a few people on the internet.

Better: maya
Easier to use: 3dMax
i learned 3dMax in high school and it's relatively intuitive, i played around with maya a little bit and it looks like it has more potential but a MUCH steeper learning curve.

you can download the maya PLE (personal learning edition) from their website for free to test it out. Im not sure what the differences are between that one and the full versions.

does anyone have any recommendations for sites or maybe some cheap books for learning maya?

You're going to do movie editing with Maya?

I thought it was for content creation (ie. 3D rendering, animation). 😕

Seriously... last time I checked, a full copy of Maya was worth more than a small car.

It might have "fallen off the back of the truck"... Anyone gotten this deal from a white van?

if you're a student it's much cheaper http://www.journeyed.com

just need to show proof of enrollment.

yeah, most graphic houses create in Maya then comp in after effects or combustion(better).

1. Maya has been lowered to about $3000 if I remember correctly.

2. Maya Personal Learning edition is free. It lets you do pretty much anything except everything ends up with a watermark.

Another major contender is Newtek Lightwave. I just bought it from Journeyed.com for about $400. 3Dmax, i hear, is the easiest program to learn.

I don't understand why you would want a 3d modelling program for movie editing though.

???

ah, I see

3dmax + plugins ~ Maya...

Max itself isn't huge (it'll definitely do much more than you'll ever be using it for though), so I'd say got with whichever is cheapest. I learned 3dmax and have a few decent renders with that. Maya is much larger and has all the fur controls and shaders (plus a ton of other stuff) built in. Chances are that you won't even begin to touch that stuff though.

The default renderer for max isn't that great, and I'm not too sure about Maya's (I know it's not the best out there though). You can get renderman for maya, or Brazil for max and they're much better. Actually, the best default renderer probably belongs to Lightwave believe it or not... XSI is another amazing program, but it's ultra high end.

One thing I didn't even realize until just recently is that Alias|Wavefront (Maya), discreet (3dmax), and Softimage (XSI) are all Canadian companies... 🙂
