whats better maxtor or seagate?

i have 2 hd's in mind, both are the same cost and same specs. just different brands, what should i geT?

Maxtor is ABSOLUTELY king of IDE right now.

If you're in the market for 10K+ SCSI then you definitely want a Seagate. Unless you are shooting for high-end, you are wasting money on Seagate though - their midrange isn't impressive.

If the other drive is a Seagate Barracuda IV then I would take that one. It does have quite a high seek time but uses a new bearing system make it the quietest 7200rpm drive out there right now! It is quite a bit faster Maxtor in linear transfer speeds but the seek time is quite a bit higher. I have a few Maxtor drives here too and I'm very happy with them! What I don't like about Maxtor drives are the relative high idle noise. But it depends on your ears Other people here don't seem to notice it, while I get quite irritated by the noise!

I recommend the ATA IV too. I just bought one the other day and I loved it so far. It's also quite fast as Gogga have said beating the IBM in some areas. Of course not to mention that it's awfully quiet. Hm... now I can only hear my fans and not disk access anymore
