hi im gonna be upgrading soon and i am goin to chnage my hard drives too (full system over haul baby)
at the mo i have a WD 40gb 7200rpm drive with the "whine" and a 40gig IBM drive which is also noisy,

i have seen some drives i like the look of, they are samsung spinpoint drives that have fluid dynamic bearings in them, my friend has some fluid dynamic bearing drives from WD (expensive) he has 5 and they are very very quiet.

these samsungs are SATA150 tho.......is that better or worse that IDE?

Well, IDE is in the process of being replaced by SATA, so you'd in theory be able to keep the SATA drives longer.

Also, SATA is a more advanced technology, faster transfer speeds, less power consumption. Today, most hard drives you buy from say Seagate or Western Digital, provided you buy the not dirt cheap ones, will be pretty quiet.
