Whats better for TV capture: ATI VCR or MPEG 2

Usually MPEG2. It all depends on bitrate though...mpeg2 files can be fairly large. ATI VCR is also a form of MPEG2 though, so it all depends. ATI VCR supports closed captioning, better time-shifting, etc.

I've never used ATI's program. I stick to VirtualDub/VirtualDubMod for my capturing needs, as it lets me use the XviD codec to capture.

ATI VCR is actually a superset of MPEG2. While the PQ will be exactly the same at the same settings, the VCR format supports timeshifting and file navigation better than standard MPEG-2. You can transcode VCR to MPEG in the library application as well. I'd go with VCR format uless I specifically needed MPEG for some reason.

wow thanks for the good info. Also I noticed ATI VCR resolution says 702x480 while mpeg 2 is 740x480. any difference in quality on my 19 inch crt viewsonic?

ahh yeah...I just confirmed that with Media Player Classic ("MPEG2 Video Decoder"). It can also record closed captioning. The video quality is not too shabby at all.
