Both appear to be about as compatible as the other for most players (something like 75%+ each), and both cost about the same... so is there an advantage of one over the other?

Only reason I use DVD-R (in my DVD+-RW) is because it works in my Xbox.

Might want to check to see what your dvd player will handle if you plan on making backup dvds. There's a database out there somewhere of a bunch of different dvd players and what media each will support.

Dual format drives are down to ~$140-$150. Just get that and stop worrying. I have -R because everything I have works best with it.

I like the plus format, it's 8x speed and some nice features that minus doesn't have. The media use to be more expensive but it seems to be coming down in price.

Really? At CompUSA, the only difference thing between two packs were + and - and I picked the + because it was cheaper. Brand was Imation.
