whats better: a ps2 or xbox?

i will be moving into a new apartment soon and there are some great deals out there. First 2 months free and a choice of a new ps2 or xbox gaming console package.

Im really only big on PC gaming and have never owned a console so im really stumped as what to take. I do know that i like online gaming the most and playing with others in MP games. Dunno if one console outbeats the other in that dept.

Any websites out there that discuss ps2 vs xbox for noobs like myself?
Many thx!!

I would say if you want a good MP/online system I would go with the xbox. It has quite a few MP games and you can link them over a network very easy. But if you want more games go with the ps2. On a side note though you can use either one as a dvd player wich could make this a good deal in a different way. I have found for my self that the Xbox is better at playing back dvds, but it also costs aprox. an extra $20 to buy the dvd kit for the xbox.

Xbox is better hardware wise, but PS2 has a better game selection. I wouldn't rule out the Gamecube either. I use my Gamecube more than any of the others (I've got all three systems), and it's cheaper (and it does have online support, though not as polished as the other two). If you're set on PS2 or Xbox though, go for the PS2.

That's two for the Gamecube, although I think the PS2 has the best selection of quality titles right now.

The Xbox definately is the best in terms of console hardware. Don't let online gaming abilities pull you toward it however. The PC is still much better for MP, especially shooters.

Halo 2 might change all that however!

I like the Ps2 because of the games. Granted I don't play many games beyond RPGs (oh! And Ape Escape!!!!! If you get a Ps2 you MUST rent this game and then buy it 😉 ) so that might affect my decision

I have both X-Box and PS2. The PS2 does have more games, but, out of the games I have, I like the x-Box more.

Online gameplay is great and only cost's a few bucks a year.

DVD movie playback on the X-Box is much smother. I used my PS2 for the last 2 years till it started having trouble reading disks. I switched to the X-Box for movies and I am MUCH happier. Don't know if that's really a factor in your decistion though.

My PS2 is only 2 years old and has now totally stopped reading disks. I have tried cleaning it. The x-Box seems like a much sturdier design.

I just bought Star Wars Knight's of the Old Republic for X-Box last night. Graphic's are SWEET! Stayed up and played the game for 6 hours last night...

whats better: a ps2 or xbox?

Technically? An XBOX.

In practice? Whichever lends itself most to the type of games you play.

The GC`s online support isnt fully completed yet, although there are strong rumors of GameSpy running it on the BigN`s behalf, and with no subscription fee`s either.

It has the best selection, not quality selection though. 90% of the PS2 games are complete crap. The GC has the best selection of quality games, followed by XBox, then PS2.

In terms of "brute force power", then the Xbox wins, but in terms of flexability, efficiency and ease of programming on, the GC is the clear winner.

Or not. It`ll be a good game by console FPS standards, but compared to PCs, the consoles will always be second best for FPS, online or offline.

An easy way to decide, is look at which platform has more games that you would like on.

Well, HalfLife will always be my favorite, but Halo is second. The little guys comments still crack me up.

Oh No....GRANADE!

I agree, I like the graphics better on the xbox, but alot more games for the ps2.

XBox no doubt. The PS2 has an ass load of games but IMO the XBox has more games that I'd like to play. I don't want ONE game on the PS2.

XBOX has the best hardware/online/multiplayer
PS2 has the best/most games
Gamecube, well, nintendo is falling behind, unless you have a young child

Gamecube, well, nintendo is falling behind, unless you have a young child
Nintendo's games have class and gimme a break already with the kiddie console line, it's getting old. So Nintendo's games (the great bulk of them anyway) don't feature blood, guts, etc. does that mean that they're not good? And if you think that the ps2 has the best games you've got to be nuts (or maybe we should agree to disagree here). XBox has better games than the ps2. The only game that I'd buy a ps2 for is Gran Turismo.

Let me break things down here:
XBox: impressive hardware, more mature games, great multiplayer
Ps2: more games
GameCube: high-quality games (some kid-friendly & some not so), good hardware

If you can look further, you would see that xbox would have a pretty future within this 3 to 5 years.

1. Online compatibility
Xbox doesnt need an external network adaptor to get online, however, you do need a subscription to be enable to get online. I know that really pissed people off, but knowing that you can play for free for 12 months(1year lol, this is how they promote their ads ) and be enable to download some new content for the game, so why should you really care about that subscription?

2. PSX wouldn't suprise the US market in 2004
As you can see, Americans are not interest in a intergated game console. You see, if you really want to have a high quality media center console, you would go for the Windows Media Center( and Yes, it is on the comptuer), becaue you can do all the thing that a PSX can do (by the way, you can upgrade the computer too!!! but you cant do it w/ PSX!!!). P.S. All the computer pro wouldn't buy the PSX unless they are rich, becaue ---1. They can build a computer w/ a video capture card such as the ATI All-in-wonder Radeon 9800 Pro!!!!! 2. They can just hook up the cable from the PS2 and then plug them to the capture card which can create much higher quality!!!!

3. Yea, Xbox do not have a great gaming library but that doesnt mean it wil not do so
Xbox is trying to encourage more companies to join their line, no doubt that they should. Some pretty good titles are starting to emerge from the market. For example the Dino Crisis 3, and the Counter-Strike, and the Rainbow Six 3 Raven Shield, which would be available by the end of this year. We should wait and look forward to the xbox gaming library. Keep in mind that, Microsoft just join the gaming console war in 2002, and Sony had started since 10 years ago, thus, no doubts they have a bigger library.

4. Xbox worth for the price....I think....
I am not sure if this is a solid point or not... but ps2 come without a harddrive and all those "high-tech" components (graphic chip and CPU etc.), with a price tag the same as xbox. Of course, i have read so many articles that attacked this point by saying "So, they dont have any great games, why does xbox requires so many components anyway?" which I have already defend this point at the last few paragraphs.

5. It depends on you!!!!!!
If you really wanna buy a game console, go for it! What can stop you? However, if you can wait, I suggest that you should wait'til November (the date when Metal Gear Twins Tales for GameCube) or March, 2004 (one year after xbox and ps2 drop their console price). In November, I predict that because of the release of Metal Gear, GameCube MAY drop down 10 to 20 dollars, and sony and microsoft may do certain action in respond. Same thing happen to March, 2004 (Release of PSX)

Hope this article help you!!!!

i do beta testing for the xbox for microsoft and although i cant speak of specific titles due to a gag order i signed, i tell ya, the xbox has $hit for games and has nothing on the horizon that would make me want to buy the xbox or even have one in my house if given to me for free. the ps2 is far and away the better of the two systems.

Nintendo is not falling behind.
Just because some of their games have supposed "kiddy" oriantated characters doesnt mean that the games is crap. For example. Mario & Zelda, both "kiddy" games, but both are excellent and essential purchaces for any gamer.
As for no blood and guts. Just cos a game doesnt have them doesnt make that game rubbish, or any less of a game that has them.
Becides, there are plenty of games on Nintendo that are more of an adult nature, several made by Nintendo themselves.

To belive that Nintendo consoles and games are for children is showing ignornace to the gaming market. A true gamer would appricicate all types of games consoles and their games for their merits.

Nintendo said that the Gamecube is a console designed purely for games. Nothing more.
PS2 and Xbox are both multiplatform entertainment systems. Which is all well and good, but not everyone wants an all singing all dancing console.
Its been admitted by many developers that the GC is far more easyier to program for than any other console to date. The original playable E3 demo of SW:RLRS2 was made in under month by Factor5, which shows the ease of programming for the GC.

I wonder how Microsoft ended up choosing somebody that obviously has NO taste is games...

So, you see all the games that are coming out? Or just the "$hit" ones from MS? I was a beta tester for XBox Live but not anything for MS since. So you don't sign up for the testing with individual software companies? You gust got lucky and see everything?

I was also a beta tester for Star Wars Galaxies. It's very hard to beta test a game and them want to play the released version many times. You are either SO sick of bugs that you don't want to see it anymore, or you have just played it so much that you are tired of it.

Just thinking...

How do you beta test XBox games if... You don't have an XBox???

Me? A Sony fan boy. Dont make me laugh. I cant stand Sony. Both the PS, PS1 and PS2 sucked imo. I cant stand their products, they are vastly over priced.
I hate Sony more than i hate microsoft. And thats saying something.

Console comparison chart

PS2 has a larger library but since most titles these days are multiplatform its not that big an advantage. At this point the PS2 has begun to show its age. Gamecube probably has the best exclusive titles, but the 3rd party support is dwindling and the system isnt very flexible (cant play DVDs, no hard drive, no online mp options in the forseable future). I'd go with the Xbox just because you can do so much with it. http://www.xbox-scene.com/
