whats best to help quit smoking

my dad is in the hospital right now. one of his lung is full of fluid, so much that his heart was displaced to his right. that lung was also pressing oh his nerves and was causing much pain. the doctors drained some of the fluid out and my dad is feeling much better. anyways hes been smoking for 40 years. after this incident i hope he will quite. what is the best to help him stop smoking? patches or gum?

He's gotta want to quit, honestly no B.S., btw I'm sorry to hear about your dad I hope all works out for the best.

If he really wants to quit he should consider talking to a doctor to see whats best for him in his situatuion..

my mom has smoked since she was 16, and has tried to quit every which way there is.
i fear she will be on oxygen, lungs shot, or die of cancer because of it in the future.
 
Regular BJ's will help... 😉

Needless to say, I don't get 'em regular enough, hence the pack of Marlboros in my pocket. 🙁

i have wondered. i have the hots for this guy who is a smoker. how bad it is for the non-smoker to kiss a smoker?
 
Like everything else in life, there's no magic bullet. Nicotine gum / patches may help, but just a bit. The person has to want to quit to a high degree. Most smokers do want to quit, but just not enough.

Also, he is going to need something to fight his other addictions with. Gum, toothpicks, harmonica are good for the oral fixation. A yoyo, a pack of cards can help with the hands.
 
I smoked for 16 years and quit 4 and 1/2 years ago using the patch. I don't think I could have done it without the patch. I also went to the local tobacco store and purchased a little pipe tobacco and a pipe, and that helped a little too. I really think you have to have you're mind set on doing it.
 
I don't think there is a *best* way. Some ways might be better than others, but in the end it will boil down to the individual.

First, he has to *really* want to quit. Once he achieves that, there are different things he can do from there. Some people prefer cold turkey, some prefer a patch of gum, and some utilize various methods of visualization or support groups.

I smoked cancer sticks for 10 years until I quit.

Nothing will help him quit smoking unless he *really* wants to quit.


My secret to quitting? I just quit buying smokes.....
 
I had been a pack a day smoker for 10 years until about a week ago. I didn't quit but when I was fasting I got down to a cig a day. now that I am done with my fast I only let myself have 2 a day. So now I am a pack a week smoker instead. I figure I can work on getting rid of those two later.
 
My dad was a smoker till I got struck with asthma. He feared that I would lead to a risky life so he quitted for good. That was when I was six years old and now I'm 20.

I was differentiating between someone who gives a half-hearted effort and someone who is committed to quitting.
 
I got a prescription of wellbutrin from my doctor and for me it was the only thing that helped with nerves and cravings. I would pretty much just forget about wanting a cigarette. expensive but cheaper than the price of cigarettes in the long run. the gum just made me want to smoke more. the patches did help some

I agree 100%. While I've never smoked (so I didn't have to quit), I've watched many friends and family members quit. It'll never happen until he *really* wants to quit. Just really wanting to quit isn't enough. Many people really want to quit 5-6 times a week. The highlight is the critical thing - HE must REALLY want to quit. Nothing will work if you try to force it. If you really want to quit, it is often an easy thing. Just don't light another cigarette. That is all it takes. Each craving only lasts 30 seconds or so. They pass quickly. Then you are done.

Many people like crutches (gum, patches, etc). That'll depend on the individual though. None will work if he doesn't really want to quit. Most won't need any crutch if they are ready.
