whats best sound card for gaming with a Duron setup

can i get some opinions on this,i have a sb 16 in my boys, and he swears the a3d's are the chit!!So he want's one,are they really that much better as far as hearing better in say CS or HL??

A3D cards and supported games sound way better than EAX (flamesuit ON!). And either would be WAY better than just a SB16. Only problem with A3D is that there is very limited driver support for Win2K (which is what the civilized world now uses) - i.e., you have to jump through hoops to get 4-speaker support in Win2K. Also, there are a lot of problems getting A3D cards to work in new motherboards (at least in my experience... didn't work in the A7V or other KT133-based boards with a few exceptions).

So, yeah, any "modern" sound card will sound better. It's really too bad Aureal got destroyed by Creative's legal team... they really had better hardware. I was sad when I had to sell my MX300 for a SBLive!

it IS better than the SB Lives.

I'm running a Hercules Game Theater XP with my Duron. Great sound card, the rack that it comes with is really cool.
