What's best Regisry Cleaner?

I am running Windows 98 on a P2 system by Dell. What do you recommend to clean out my haggard registry? Thanks for the info.

I have used WinDoctor, part of Norton/Symantec System Works for over 3 years. Does a good job. There are also some shareware ones out there - but NSW has always been part of my systems since about 2000.

Upgrade to XP.

Seriously, what problem are you trying to solve in running this "registery cleaner"?

Be very careful with "registry cleaners" often times they can cause more damage that what you are trying to correct. I know this from personal experience.

Like deleting your temporary Internet files and cookies, using regisrty cleaners for periodic maintenance is unnecessary and may do more harm than good.

Agreed.

I wouldn't agree that, done prudently, registry cleaning is completely useless.

Just yesterday I was noticing that my system was taking for ever to boot up and I looked at the logs and noticed some Norton Antivirus stuff that was still loading into my system even though I had uninstalled the software. I manually removed the registry entries and boot up time was cut by a minute.

I think you ought to know what you're doing when cleaning the registry but I guess I just woulnd't make it axiomatic that it's a waste of time.

What you did wasn't what we're talking about when we say that running a registry 'cleaning' utility is bad. You manually fixed a problem; we're not talking about that.
