What's best for sound-proofing HD in a laptop?

I need to sound-proof the extremely loud HD of my laptop (IBM Travelstar 12 GB).

What would be the best material to wrap around the HD? I will worry about adequate cooling, but I still need to know what material will help block the noise coming out of the drive.

Dynamat that's used for sound-proofing of desktop PCs is too thick.. I need something thin, like 8-10 sheets of paper put together.

Rubber? Aluminum? Steel? Plastic? Duct tape? Would a few sheets of paper on top of any of this help?

that seems to work pretty well. If no, try some sort of vibration dampening materials as they will probably do a good job killing sound as well, killing 2 birds with 1 stone

You can get paint on tar from any auto parts shop which is used for deadening the underbody of cars. I have used this stuff in my desktop case and it works a dream.

Buy or trade for another HDD (Toshiba drives are generally quieter that the IBM's). There isn't much room in most laptops for stuffing material around the HDD. You might find some peace and quiet by finding alernatives to reduce the amount of disk access. If you do cover the drive, please don't cover the breathing hole if your drive has one. Covering the hole could kill your drive within a few months. You could also download IBM's "feature tool", but I am about 95% sure that none of the travelstar drives support accoustical management.
