What's another word for ascertained?

I thought ascertained was a word more along the lines of determined or concluded or figured out.

along the lines of explained.. elucidate, expound, illuminate, clarify..

I remember a "Kids in the Hall" episode where the guy kept using that word and it pissed off his co-workers and boss, funny skit.
