A hand gun, not a rifle or submachine gun. Can you say magazine, or does that denote rifle?

You're going to get a bunch of crazy people in here that will go off on a rant about the difference between a magazine and a clip.

magazine: a periodic publication containing pictures and stories and articles of interest to those who purchase it or subscribe to it; "it takes several years before a magazine starts to break even or make money"

clip: A part that retains the pen in a shirt pocket, etc.

Again i think Magazine is appropriate.

Cool, so "... as he withdrew the magazine, cleared the chamber and reinserted the clip," makes sense, right?

No, not really.

Why would you call it a magazine and a clip in the same sentence? You can replace 'the clip' with 'it'.

'it' would be ambiguous.

Why not?

No, using two different words suggets two different objects, and makes it too wordy. It should be: He withdrew the magazine, cleared the chamber, then reinserted it.

No, because you already identified it as a magazine. So 'it' would be that same magazine. It's like saying 'i drove the car around, then parked the automobile in the garage'. THAT'S confusing.

A handgun has a magazine.

This is correct. A clip pretty much just holds the bullets together. A mag encloses the bullets and provides spring tension and a feed ramp. They are not the same things. If you want to be accurate with your conversation or writing, they should not be interchanged.
