I want to get a sub in the nearish future. This will be going onto probably a stock stereo system and simply used to give some more punch. My thoughts were:

Amplifier: $100 at most
Box: $30 I can get a junky box from walmart for $30 or build my own, but that walmart one seems fine
Sub: 10" for $70 or so

I know it's not going to be anything to write home about (not that my parents care about subwoofers anyway), but I am pretty sure this will give me what I'm looking for. What is a decent sub in that price range and should I get a higherly quality 8" or a lower quality 12" instead? This isn't to go pimping around Nelly and woo tang, just some extra bass for my tunes! For the amp I was going to probably get one of those two channel Jensens.

The system this would be on would be likely a stock maxima or something of that ilk, so better than a cavalier, but it won't be tainting the sweet sounds of a high end luxury auto either.

Check your local stereo equipment stores and ask if they have any used equipment. There are some people that build hefty enclosures (better than the store-bought crap) and you can get deals on other used goodies. For cheap amps, I'd check some of the auction sites on the internet....not EBAY, but UBID or one of those types. I was able to get a $300 Sony amp on there once for $99 brand new.

Damn I'll be sure to check out used ones. That's a good idea. I don't want the box to be too big. I will either get a small one or build a small one myself.

after I get a better, working car, I was gonna look at some stereo equipment thats a bit bassier than the stock stuff. I dont wanna go overboard and put like $500 worth of equipment (and yes I know, $500 is nothing for you hardcore stereophiles :D)

I just wanted some good speakers in the car without needing a sub.

A small bazooka sub or any of the small self contained systems are hundreds of times better than no sub at all.
They are also very simple to install and can be found used fairly inexpensively.

skoorbie check out the zeb dood! my honest rec is get 1 12inch ultimate sound cupric sub for $129 and then seal it with a decent amp. That sub is actually an Infinity Kappa Perfect sub but labeled under Ultimate sound. Ultimate is actually a manufacturer for Infinity. Get the dual voice coil also. The Cuprics are mainly a sound quality sub but they have can also go low too...i'm running 2 12's in my car right now.

if your not looking to spend much i recommend getting a low end amp like you were going to, but scrap the box and 10" sub idea, get the 6x9 mid/sub combo. especially if you wanna save a little room weight and keep from having a box slide around your trunk

You can get a pretty sweet system for around $500, if you do it right.
I prefer Kicker.... I have 2x 10's Kicker Impluse Subs, an Ix252 amp, 2x Pioneer 6 1/4 in the doors, and 2x kicker R13's tweeters. I run this with a Pioneer Cd player. I bought the Cd player off a buddy who went out and bought a Kinwood Excelon.....(sp) for $50. Works great, and even reads cd's that his expensive cd player won't :0). Besty Buy, and other local electronic stores around here are always running buy one get one free sales, that's how I gots the 2 Impulse Subs. I bought them for $85. I bought the tweets for $90, got the Pioneers previous to all of this at Evil-Mart for $35-40. Amp cost $95. I built the boxes myself, cost me some household tools that I already had, and about $25 for the connectors and the 3/4 inch particle board. Also don't forget the good ol wiring kit you'll need, ~$25-35 depending on what you get.

Compared to the good ol Nissan paper speakers I had before this system rocks my compact truck. You should be able to get a decent system for $500. Also my buddy witht the kenwood, has 2x 12kenwood subs, and my truck sounds as good or better than his in his sonoma. Also I did have an 800watt Fosgate amp hooked up on those 2 10's, and the difference was noticable, but not worth the extra 300-500....imo....

I've got a 2x150W (RMS) Sony xplod amp, barely used, that I'm selling. $70 shipped. :) Got a bandpass box with a 12" inside too but the plexi on the box is slightly cracked.
