What's an "NSF processing fee"?

I recently made a payment to my credit card through my savings account for a $1300 Dell laptop. I was returning the laptop, but decided to pay off the bill before Dell credits me to avoid interest from my CC company. I guess I accidentally entered the wrong savings account number or routing number, and the payment got rejected, but a day later the credit from Dell showed up.

Right after that, I saw a NSF Processing Fee of $37 billed to my credit card.

What the heck is this?

"Nonsufficient Funds" I'm pretty sure.

Edit: Heh, figured I wouldn't be the first to post it.

Non-Sufficient-Funds. As in they dinged you because you tried to pay with an account that didn't have enough cash. So not only did they reject your payment, but they nailed you hard for it.

WTF? My savings account has $13,000 in it! WAY more than the $1,300 I was trying to pay off!

So I just called my CC company. Basically I'll get charged this fee EVEN IF I ACCIDENTALLY ENTER THE WRONG ACCOUNT INFORMATION?!!? As in they don't even check to see if the account's MINE before trying to take money from it?

You can straighten it up with a phonecall.
You gave them a fvcked up number. They tried to cash the check. It failed for non-sufficient funds.
If you call and explain your stupidity, they'll likely credit your account.

Nope, I called them hoping to straighten it out. Basically I was met by an extremely rude CSR who didn't give a f*ck about being nice because she's just talking to a worthless stupid college kid, much like you guys are doing now.

*sigh* I've been on these forums for 4 f*cking years, and I really don't know why I'm still here. The lack of sympathy here is appalling.

You'll get a lot of sympathy if you tell people your dog go ran over by a U-Haul truck.

sympathy :) jesus here is your tissue, it's a little salty.

I didn't know you were a worthless stupid college kid, but should everyone cover you for that?

you made the error, it's $37, suck it up and think next time. Most of your *haters* have been here as long or longer than you...

This fee should have been stated in your cardholder agreement with your CC company. You did read the disclosure didn't you?

Why are you claiming it was THEIR mistake? YOU entered the incorrect data.

Now, having said that... on Monday, call the cc company again, and apologize to them, saying you made a mistake that resulted in a charge on your credit card, that you figured out what caused the problem ("I must have fat-fingered the account number when typing it onto your web site") and kindly and respectfully ask if there's any way they could credit that charge back to your account.

Being an ass on the phone does you no good. The person on the other end of the line has ALL the power in the conversation. Call up and be friendly, be polite, be apologetic, be humble, be good natured, and ASK in a nice way if the charge could be credited back. There's a good chance you can find someone who can say yes, if you use the correct approach.

You'll be a great manager someday. You screwed up, but somehow it's everyone else's fault but yours. ;)

Cancel that credit card and get another one if they won't waive the fee.

I hate overdraft fees. And yea, the bank will hit you with them for any little thing. My bank likes to charge INTEREST on the OD fees!! Pisses me off, but it's like 12 cents, so even if I was anal enough to call for it, I'd probably just get told it's not worth crediting, and they're not going to do it. And I don't want to switch banks, because no other bank I've found is as good as this one.

But anyway, if you call back, be polite, ask nicely, and they just might credit you. It's worked for me before. Good luck.
