I don't imagine the cost of living being that different. I think most large law firms basically pay on the same scale between LA/NY.

Unless you love NYC, it is pretty unproductive to move laterally on the payscale.

Well of course I wouldn't move laterally. I was thinking of asking for 10-15% more than what I am making plus the difference in cost of living. I love NYC btw.

Have you ever lived here? I'm from LA. Grew up in socal, lived there my entire life. I moved to Manhattan last september. This place is an absolute shithole. Rents are absurd, even compared to LA. Groceries are at LEAST twice as expensive. You save money by not having a car, that's about it. That's offset by the city tax you have to pay. For my wife and I, it's about $400 a month, combined, which is about 10% of our take home. It's generally filthy, no matter where you live. If you live on a shitty block, you won't sleep, because people will be partying or making a shit ton of noise until all hours of the morning.

Moving INTO Manhattan is like trying to build a mansion on top of the "Hollywood" sign in LA.

You should have looked at the outer neighborhoods. Like Queens or even Staten Island. Brooklyn has too many shit head hipsters. And the Bronx is something I just flat out avoid.

NYC is just fine the way it is. Like any city anywhere, it's loud, dirty and good for just two things; work and partying.

I thought about going to the outer boroughs, but I don't work 9-5, I work 50-60 hours a week, 6 days. I did a 100 mile/day commute in LA, never again. I have a 10 minute walk to work (Columbia), my wife works literally around the corner. I'd love to be able to have a yard for our dogs, but that ain't happening unless I commute another 2 hours/day, and I literally don't have the time unless I'm willing to sleep 5 hours a night, which I'm also not doing again.

Where are you getting a 100mile commute from the outer boroughs?

Queens has neighborhoods that are 15 minutes away from Manhattan. Especially the ones near the train.
