What's an efficient way to catalog my dad's movie collection?

Well, it's gotten to a point now that we're buying movies we already have. What is some good software or an efficient way to organize all of these movies? We have >1000 including TV shows that I'd like to get listed alphabetically with the format, who owns the movie (this is our whole family's collection), genre and year. Would Excel be a good choice or is there something else? (I'm not exactly the biggest fan of that program.)

Well DVD Profiler is pretty good although It only has DVD's of course. You could however if you have a VHS version just put it in as a dvd. only problem is going to be if there is no DVD version.

Just found this don't know how well it is.

cool thing with DVD Profiler is that you can upload it to the internet(they give you "webspace") for you movies. Then anyone can view your collection. Or if your computer crashes you can just redownload the data with the program.
DVDProfiler is awesome

Biggest problem is 80% of our collection is on VHS. We're not exactly big fans of DVD since we're not extremely interested in special features or quality. I know a lot of people get pissed when they hear that but this is just my family.

What is CueCat?

CueCat was a free barcode scanner that radioshack gave out. You can still find them on ebay for about $10. It makes it really easy to scan the bar codes in. Then you can goto amazon and get the info about the movie and not have to type in every title.

I think that other program I linked to did that automatically tho.
