What's AMD to do?

With a 3Ghz Quad core Penryn reaching easily 4Ghz on stock cooler and NV releasing a $200-$250 mid-range killer, AMD bosses must be reaching for the grog!?.....

I wonder if intend the 88GT will reach a low $200 by xmas, and then the release of the 256Mb version......the new AMD card will have to be very cheap to compete?

Got to be good for us!

AMD seems to be doing pretty good right now not worring about performance. Good for them. I can hardly wait until they release a 15watt 9700pro or a FXXXXX 650000 =crippled L2 cache X2.

no the 88GT will not reach $200 by xmas... IMO demand for this card will remain healthy until 08... which means retail prices through the holidays...

I mean who knows. Maybe at the pricepoint the AMD parts will outperform the Nvidia/Intel ones. I always buy the best within my price range never looking at the top high end unless that is my price range.

Maybe they will just be cheaper and thus offer better value. Anything can happen, they can even outperform the competition. I am not saying they will and I don't think they really will (maybe video card), but again...anything can happen.

Retail price is $200 for base models with 512meg vram.

No, retail prices for 256mb are 200$ ish and 250$ ish for 512mb.

As for AMD/ATI, we can only wait and see, can we not. The 8800gt is one of the best things to happen to the videocard market in the past few years, to bad I can't profit from it, but it is nonetheless. If ATI can come up with something similar, and a pricewar erupts, then it will by far be the best thing that ever happened for gamers.

"For this launch, we have been given a $50 price range for 8800 GT. NVIDIA told us that there will be no $200 8800 GT parts available at launch, but they should come along after prices settle down a bit. Initially, we thought that the 256MB parts would be $200 and the 512MB parts $250. It turns out that we were mistaken.

Not only that, but we can expect the stock clocked 512MB 8800 GT to hit $200 at the low end. The 256MB part, which won't show up until the end of November, will hit prices below $200."
