i know right now the hottest video card that you can pick up at electronics stores for gaming is the 9700 pro, but usually nvidia doesnt take long to bring out a card to battle the ati chips, anyone know when the next nvidia (or whatever the next hottest thing is) will be coming out?

Yes, eVGA is projecting around March 9 also. Of course the next hottest thing should come shortly after the GeforceFX in the form of the Radeon R350 which, speculation has it, is ready and waiting.

CompUSA has an expected ship date of February 5th.

Yeah, R350 is next. That would be funny if it is actually ready now, but they are waiting so they can release it the week after the FX cards ship and have it blow them away.

Of course, FX (NV30) was supposed to be out 6 months ago. But NVidia claims that NV31 and NV35 are ahead of schedule. They have said that after NV30, they will be back on track for their regular 6 month product cycles. So I wouldn't be surprised to see R350 released a month or two after FX, then see NV31 and NV35 shortly after that. Of course NVidia can't release their next card too soon after FX or they will destroy the FX sales.

Short product cycles = good for gamers.

Its been said many times that NV30 has not thrown Nvidia too far off its product cycle. Nvidia didn't sit on its ass while the kinks of its .13 micron process were being ironed out, and despite all the claims that Nvidia was lagging due to technology, thats clearly not the case. As had been said on many sites including AT, the NV30 was taped out on schedule, they just couldn't get the .13 yields necessary from TMSC, causing the widespread delays.

Also, those that think ATI is going to have a cakewalk through its .13 micron transition are in for a shocker as well. Its a painful process as we've seen through the growing pains of AMD and now Nvidia.
