It's time for a new computer for my mom and since I'm home from college for only the weekend we have to be able to buy it tonight or tomorrow. Are some makers known for better quality than others? What brand should i get when we go out to best buy, circuit city, office max etc?

If you want something that is of a superior build quality than other cheapo laptops, then look no further than IBM Thinlpads like the one I have in my sig the R50e I got for $ 849, and I will suppose that your mother isn't into gaming so the R50e will be perfect for her, though you want something that you will get from a retailer , in that case do not expect something that will last all of them are full of crap even the dell ones are a major pain in the ass, when it comes to laptops my experience is limited to Thinkpads becasue I like to buy things with a minimal warranty with no regrets.
But this might be of a little help go to here adn pick the laptops that are within your mom's price range, then read the reviews carefully and look for the major issues that other buyers have faced and avoid lapotps with these issues, and then once you got your mind set on a laptop got to the hot deals section in AT and see if you can find places with nice savings on it and then enjoy ;)
For example ACER is a very good manafacturer , and this one is going for $ 584 after rebates it's one hell of a deal
you can order it for your mom and she will have it by hmm tuesday-thursday depending on the shipping service you want.
