4800SE is 4400 with AGPx8.
basically, same thing
Exactly. Could we please make the naming of these cards just a bit more confusing?
Yes, we can
/lets make a trip to ontario
Our line of cards is confusing with VE and LE and LELE etc. lets steal 3dfx naming scheme and make it even better by using it to signify directx version compatablilty.
lets change the name of our radeon VE to radeon 7000
but people will think low of the original radeon becuase the other has a 7000 next to it and people will think the 7000 better. lets rebag it and call it 7200.
7500 comes and goes
8500 comes
8500LE , make you think limited edition eh? LOWER THE CLOCKSPEEDS!, now its slower than the 8500
9000 Hey, lets make a 8500 real cheap to make and take away its performance, but they will think it is better becuse of the higher the number the higher the performance, plus they are cheaper to make so we will make $$$$$$$$. it goes against our entire naming scheme becuase it is not directx 9 but who cares.
now lets call our new highend part a 9700 pro, PRO sounds cooler and 700 is higher than the 600 on the geforce
downclock it and call our 300 dollor card a regular 9700.
then lets take the 9700 and disable the 256 bit memory bus and call it a 9500 pro.
Nah! lets take it a step further and disable some more pipelines and make yet another card called the 9500, becuase 500 is higher tan 400 on the geforce.
Uh OH, people were smarter than we thought, they are realizing that the 9000 is slower than a 8500 even tho its number is higher, lets take a 8500LE and just change its number to 9100. there that fixed it.
I cant find my butt with both hands, so lets make the same mistake again and make a 8xagp 9000 and call it a 9200, its cheaper to make and people will think it is faster becuase the number is higher than a 9100 even tho its not.
Now, we got this new value card and we dont know where to put it. since it is new, we cant call it 9400 becuase that make it a lower number than the one that it is supposed to replace. lets just call it 9600 even though the 9500 beats it at the speeds we choose for it.
Lets o/c the 9700 pro and call it the 9800 pro
/meanwhile in santa clara
ATI Stole 3dfx naming scheme and used higher number than US. i guess it is now an industry standard, i was used to using MX to get away with stuff and they always used VE and LE, now we got to make numbers TOO. Quickly make the new versions of the geforce3 be called TI, yeh Titanium, people love titanium and large multiples of 100.
geforce4 comes and goes
Raddy 9700s come
dang, ati owned us, we need better marketing! FAST!!
lets make our Geforce line 8Xagp and increase prices eventhough there is no performance boast, and make the number higher. there that will hold them off till the next generation.
We got this new geforceFX and we are going to make the number of the lower end one higher than the previous generation eventhough it does not outperforms it, the 5200 is born.
600 is higher than 500 so our new card will be called 5600 ULTRA, becuase ultra is better than PRO
same with all nvidia cards after that. Mr. Huang needs to stop playing throw the dart at the 3dfx engineers and put them to work on integrating 3dfx and nvidia technology so the graphics card deserve a higher number
/back to canada, this time to Matrox
we have not done anything in a while. lets make the parhelia 512 bit, the console market seems to do well with identifining with bits, lets hope we can do the same for the graphics industry.
/back to america, this time to trident
Marketing make head hurt. me use XP as name
