what's a swap file do?

The swap file is where the OS puts data that it is using when it runs out of RAM. IT "swaps" the data in and out of the RAM.

Oh.. so when I partition my drive I have to put that in eh? I thought that paging files did that? Do you only need a swap for dual booting? Or do you always need one? When I partitioned my drive yesturday I didn't make a swap file.. I made c: three and a half gigs of fat32.. for 98.. hmm.. godddamn.. why won't NT setup see my goddamn harddrive..?? !@!!! I try using the drivers I got for the damn promise controller.. damn damn damn!!! @#@$@ sorry

you don't need to make a swap file. windows will make use of whatever space there is in the drive where it is in to make the swap file to the size it needs, unless you choose to specify where you want the swap file to be created and what size it is to be.
