A step (stepper) motor is a motor that has several windings that allow you to rotate the shaft in very small increments and precisely position the rotation of the shaft.

They also have a lot of torque and when you stop one its really hard to manualy make it move.

Used lots in robotics and positioning, because you have precise control over positining of (usually) a pulley on the shaft.

thanks guy. I think I have an idea now.

so you need an controller than right? can't just hook it up to power like reg. motors?

you need a controller. it's not plugin and run like regular motors. the coils need to be energized in a certain order for it to go the way you wanna

A synchronous motor with the magnetic field electronically switched to rotate the armature magnet around.

there are usually four wires coming out of it. you need a controller to pulse those wires in the correct sequence to step it forward or backwards. depending on the motor, they can step in small degree increments (1.5, 3, so on). i'm working with one right now for my senior project :)

the controller is making the stepper motor turn forward or backwards, making the elevator attached to it go up or down.
