whats a raw drive?

how come i cant do chkdsk or even format! and when i check the space on it thru win2k it looks empty but it says only 20 gigs are available and the whole drive is 40 gig maxtor ata100 hooked up on IDE.

Go to the administrative tools. What does disk mgmt. report?

Use FDisk. You may have a none DOS partition on the drive that FDisk can get rid of.
