What's a plug and play BIOS extension?

I have my Asus A8V up and running, but I'm having a few problems. I got a BSOD while installing a piece of software, then I reboot and there is an unknown SCSI controller (I don't have SCSI) installing itself. It also tries to install a plug and play bios extension, but fails. I remove the SCSI controller and the bios extension, but the bios extension comes back. I tried reinstalling the VIA 4in1 drivers again, but this does not work. Any ideas?

Reset BIOS to defaults. I'll bet you have PnP-aware OS set to Yes, it should be at No. Also, if this board has SATA it will show up in Windows as SCSI, but I wouldn't be surprised if you need to install the SATA drivers from a floppy during setup.

Why should it be set to no? The nvidia webisite says set it to yets. Mine is, but I have been getting a couple bsod's....could this be why?

Yep. Set it at No so the BIOS can do its job, in short. Trying to make Windows do BIOS stuff is asking for trouble. It's an old setting that is meant for older OSes, not much help nowadays.

Thanks, I'll double check this setting when I get home. I think I set pnp OS to yes, but I'm not sure. I do recall pondering over it late last night, but I was full of steak fajita. 😛
