What will you be doing with the monitor? If your playing games, no way you will find a DECENT 17" gaming LCD for less then $200. I don't usually try and slam other peoples opinions but I really don't think you could get a gaming LCD for that price. I mean, my bros monitor which is supposed to be pretty good was $500+shipping. It's not an exact comparison, but it just gives you an idea what pricing is.

Mostly gaming, and would prefer a CRT monitor then an LCD. If i can't get a nice 19" CRT for gaming then how about a nice 17", i'd like an improvement over my Mitsubishi Diamondpoint SB70 in terms of refresh rates at 1024x768, im at 85hz and would like 100hz at 1024.

The Samsung 997DF is a decent 19" CRT, it can be had for $199 at Best Buy. I chose it over the Viewsonic A91f+ as a "upgrade" to my Samsung 995DF. I can now get 100Hz @ 1152x864 which is great for me.

By that logic, no one would buy BFG 6800GTs as some people have had very bad experiences with them.

Now look, buying any product is a hit or miss proposition and you get what luck gives you. I got a good 997DF as have many others. Some people, unfortunately, get bad ones. It may have had a factory defect that was missed by QA. It may have been damaged in shipping. It may have unwittingly been damaged by the end user. Who knows? No one until you buy it, install it, and test it.

James3shin, go to best buy and check one out for yourself. They had one on display at my local store, I was able to play around with it before I took one home. Also, to increase your chances of getting an undamaged product, make sure the box is in immaculate condition. A crinkled, cut, or mutilated box is a tell-tale sign that the CRT might have been mishandled along the way.

No mine was not damaged, the tech looked at it when I returned it. It's just a really crappy monitor. The screen is also curved in a nasty way. It's like a flat piece of glass in front of a curved screen but it's nasty how they did it. Here's what I mean in the attached picture. That's in addition to the grainy bad color picture...I'll also say mine had air bubbles in the anti-glare coating. I dunno I just feel it's kinda my duty to warn people away lol...returning a monitor is not fun and best buy and circuit city have a 15% restocking fee...

Grr actually I can't figure out how to do atachments are they disabled or something? What I mean is the screen curves towards the corners.

Yea do a search here on "997df".

I have a 95f+. Is a very good gaming, movie monitor, but not the greatest for 2d. Text is fuzzy at highter resolutions and some geometry issues.

Mine has none of the problems you had with yours. I'd say you just had a bad monitor in general.

I've seen some very favourable opinions about the 997df, but there are also a few very negative ones around here.

I'm very happy with my Viewsonic G90F2. Its around $210.00 dollars. I only use 1024 on my desktop so I cant vouch for how sharp it would be at higher rez. For gaming its a great monitor it will do 1600X1200 at 77hz.

The geometrey was almost spot on right out of the box. This was real nice not to have to spend 2 hours just trying to make a line look straight.

It isnt true flat it has a slightly curved tube with a flat piece of glass in front of it. This doesnt bother me but I could see how it would bother some people.

Then again the two wires of trinitrons drives me nuts. Different strokes. :)

If your budget is 200 bucks and you are the kind of person that will realize you are buying a 200 buck monitor and it will not be perfect and you are not overly discriminating in your taste then you will probably be happy with the 997. It is a good monitor for 200 bucks. If you are picky and demand perfection, razor sharp text, no geometry imperfections, perfect picture then get the one that Reck recommended. I am the later type of person and I have the 930.

Almost all "flat screen" monitors are not true flat screen. They all have a slightly curved tube with a flat plane of glass in front. The mit 930 does have a true flat tube, the diamondtron natural flat. You get what you pay for.

Very good choice. I just bought that exact Mitsubishi 19" monitor a month ago, and I'm positively THRILLED with it.

If it helps, I got mine for a little bit cheaper (but still a bit more than $250), from here:
